Oktoberfest in the DMV: Where to Raise a Stein Near Washington, DC

Biergartens, brewery takeovers, and town-wide festivals through October

Oktoberfest season is officially here in Washington, DC. Munich's famous festival opened September 19 and runs through October 4, 2026, and the DMV celebrates right beside it, with beer gardens, brewery takeovers, and town-wide festivals across the District, Virginia, and Maryland. Here is my local's guide to raising a stein this fall, with a few neighborhoods worth touring while you are at it.

Oktoberfest in the District

Four ways to celebrate inside Washington, DC

Wunder Garten in NoMa

The open-air German beer garden at 1101 First Street NE is the city's classic pick. Its 11th annual Oktoberfest runs September 18 through October 11, 2026, with free admission, a Bavarian Festhaus, stein-holding contests, oompah bands, and DJ nights. It sits steps from the NoMa-Gallaudet U station and Union Market, so grab a bite before you settle in with a liter.

Café Berlin near Union Station

Just east of Union Station, Café Berlin turns its biergarten into Oktoberfest DC from September 19 through October 25, pouring Festbier and Märzen alongside Bavarian plates. It is a cozy, character-filled stop on the edge of the city's grandest station.

Oktoberfest at The Wharf

On Saturday, October 3, The Wharf hosts its annual Oktoberfest at District Pier, 760 Maine Avenue SW, with the Wiener 500 Dachshund Dash, stein hoisting, and Octoberfest beer. It is right on the Southwest waterfront, a short walk from the Waterfront station on the Green Line.

The Heurich House Museum in Dupont Circle

For a uniquely Washington, DC spin, stop by the Heurich House Museum at 1307 New Hampshire Avenue NW. Christian Heurich was a German immigrant who built the District's largest brewery, and the museum now pours at 1921, a Biergarten in its castle garden. It pairs a real taste of capital history with the season's best brews, minutes from George Washington University's Foggy Bottom campus and George Washington University Hospital.

Around the DMV

Virginia and Maryland festivals worth the trip

In Northern Virginia, the Vienna Oktoberfest takes over Historic Church Street on Saturday, October 3, with free admission, live music, craft beer, food vendors, and a kids zone. It is a small-town fall festival done right, and it sits not far from the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station on the Silver Line, which connects to George Mason University. In Maryland, the West Annapolis Oktoberfest runs Sunday, September 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with RAR Brewing and Chessie's Wharf pouring, and Frederick's Oktoberfest follows October 2 and 3 in a historic downtown worth the drive.

Raise a Stein, Then Explore the Neighborhood

Fall festivals are a great window into Washington, DC real estate

Oktoberfest weekends are also a perfect excuse to tour homes in crisp autumn light. NoMa, anchored by Union Market, is one of the city's fastest-growing neighborhoods for condos and rentals. The Wharf and Navy Yard show off the riverfront lifestyle, with Nationals Park and Audi Field nearby. Dupont Circle remains the classic choice for historic charm, with the Phillips Collection just up the street.

The city's campus neighborhoods bring their own energy: Georgetown University and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital shape the historic west, American University anchors Tenleytown, Catholic University sits at the heart of Brookland, and Howard University gives Shaw its character. Festival season is a great time to feel each one out, crowd and all, before you decide where living in our Nations Capital suits you best.

Whether you are new to Washington, DC or a longtime local, Oktoberfest is a warm, low-pressure way to meet neighbors and uncover a neighborhood you had not considered. If a festival day has you dreaming of living closer to the action, the fall market here is in full swing, and I would love to help you find it.
