Veterans Day 2026 in Washington, DC: Parades, Ceremonies, and Ways to Honor

Robert Clarke By Robert Clarke · October 28, 2026 · 5 min read

Veterans Day 2026 falls on Wednesday, November 11, and Washington, DC marks it the way only the capital can: the National Veterans Parade rolls down Constitution Avenue the Sunday before, the national ceremony begins at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on the day itself, and the memorials and museums of the National Mall stay open and free. Here is the verified 2026 schedule and the most meaningful ways to spend the day living in our Nations Capital.

The Weekend Centerpiece

The National Veterans Parade on Constitution Avenue

The National Veterans Parade steps off at noon on Sunday, November 8, on Constitution Avenue NW, running from the Capitol past the National Archives toward the Lincoln Memorial, roughly 7th to 23rd Streets. A new NVP5K run opens the morning at 8:00 a.m. from Constitution and 6th Street NW. The parade is free to watch from the curb, and its route hugs the National Mall's northern edge near the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the White House, and the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro. If you live in Penn Quarter, Chinatown, or the West End, you can walk over in minutes.

The National Ceremony

Arlington National Cemetery on November 11

On Wednesday, November 11, the Veterans Day National Ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. with the wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, followed by the observance in the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors from veterans' organizations. The cemetery is free to visit, and the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb continues all day. Take the Blue Line to Arlington Cemetery station, walk the headstone rows on the hills above the Potomac, and you will carry the morning with you for years.

The Wall, the Memorials, the Museums

Veterans Day at The Wall and a Free Museum Day

Across the river, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the National Park Service host Veterans Day at The Wall at 5 Henry Bacon Dr NW, where the black granite panels hold the names of more than 58,000 service members. The World War II Memorial's Freedom Wall, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the World War I Memorial each host their own wreath-layings, open to anyone. Every Smithsonian museum is free, so you can warm up inside the National Museum of American History's "The Price of Freedom: Americans at War," or drive to the free National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, VA, which has Veterans Day programming on November 7, 8, and 11 with timed tickets online.

A Community That Honors Service

Living in a City Built Around Service

Living in our Nations Capital means living beside the institutions that serve the country. Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda anchors military medicine just outside the District, and the region's great schools and hospitals, Georgetown University, George Washington University, American University, Howard University, Catholic University, George Mason University across the river, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, and Children's National Medical Center, make the DMV a place where service and community run deep. 2026 is also America's 250th anniversary year, with Smithsonian "Our Shared Future: 250" programming all year.

The Real Estate Angle

Why Veterans Day Is a Quiet Argument for Where to Settle

For anyone weighing a move, Veterans Day is a quiet argument for location: Foggy Bottom, Logan Circle, Penn Quarter, and the rowhouse blocks of Capitol Hill put civic life within a walk of the Mall, while Arlington and Bethesda keep the cemetery and Walter Reed minutes away. If the holiday makes you feel the pull of Washington, DC real estate, that is a feeling worth acting on.
